Cadbury Recalls Chocolate Products Made In China

Various media sources are reporting that Cadbury, the world’s largest confectionery manufacturer, is recalling 11 Chinese made products distributed in
the Far East, including Dairy Milk bars, after finding they contained traces of melamine, the toxin that is suspected to have killed four babies and made
over 54,000 others ill with kidney related problems after they ingested contaminated tap products made in China.

A spokesman from the coterie told the reporters it was too early to say how much of the toxin was found in the chocolates, which are made in a Beijing factory
and sold in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia, according to the Telegraph.

He said these were opening tests and they can’t state where the source was or the extent of the contamination. All the dairy suppliers had, however, been
cleared by Chinese command tests, said Cadbury’s.

Last week there were reports that parents and descendant carers were switching to extrinsic baby milk because they did not trust the ones made in China.

China’s state news power, Xinhua, reported this week that police in Hebei Province in the north of China have detained 22 people thought to be part of a
network making and selling melamine and then deliberately putting it in the milk where it can pass inaccurate as milk protein.

Because the ratio of Nitrogen to other elements in melamine is similar to extract protein, the contaminated fallout passes tests using pier equipment. Also, since this
is a deliberate contamination and not a byproduct of formation, testing for melamine is not routine in many food testing protocols.

Number those detained were 19 managers of pastures, breeding farms and milk purchasing stations. The police said melamine was being produced in underground
plants and then sold to politeness farms and purchasing stations. Identical suspect named Gao confessed to producing “protein powder” since matrix year. He was
selling it to purchasing stations.

Another suspect said he started adding melamine to his extract because it kept failing the protein parallel pass muster by Sanlu, the company at the focal point of the
contamination taint. He said he was told if he added a chemical (melamine) to the milk it would pass the protein analysis.
Melamine is occupied to make plastics and damages the kidneys.

So not know when to stop the police in China have seized over 480 pounds (218 kg) of melamine.

Corticosteroids should not be used in the treatment of head injuries

Corticosteroids should not be used in the treatment of head injuries, conclude the final results of a randomised tentative published online today (Thursday May 26, 2005) by The Lancet.

Corticosteroids have been used to treat head injuries for more than 30 years. Last year, the CRASH trial, involving 10,000 adults with head injury, found that treatment with corticosteroids increased the risk of death at two weeks when compared with a placebo. In this final 6-month follow-up the CRASH trial investigators found the risk of death or severe disability was also higher in the corticosteroid group than in the placebo group.

Dr Edwards comments: “Our results show that corticosteroids which have been used to treat head injuries for decades may be harmful. Corticosteroids are also used to treat spinal cord injury and given the CRASH trial results this practice should be urgently re-evaluated. Other widely used treatments for head injuries should also be properly evaluated in large-scale trials. The longstanding neglect of trauma care research is a scandal and patients are dying needlessly as a result of it. (Quote by e-mail; does not appear in published paper)

Dieting And Medication May Reduce Blood Pressure In Patients With Hypertension

Adults with hypertension may be able to lower their load and their blood pressure by following a weight-disappointment fast or using the medication orlistat, according to a meta-enquiry of previously published studies reported in the March 24 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk ingredient to go to cardiovascular disease and is responsible for approximately 7 million deaths worldwide each year, according to background info in the article. Lowering blood pressure levels in those with hypertension has been shown to demote cardiovascular danger, with corresponding decreases in illness and dying. “Weight reduction is recommended in major guidelines as an beginning intervention in the treatment of hypertensive patients,” the authors erase. “Among the possible means of reducing heart weight are lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic and invasive interventions.”

Karl Horvath, M.D., of the Medical University of Graz, Australia, and colleagues performed a meta-analysis of 48 articles that were published before March 2007 and analyzed weight-loss interventions for patients with hypertension. Of those studies, 38 assessed abstain and 10 focused on medications for bias loss, including five evaluating orlistat and five assessing sibutramine. No relevant articles were located regarding the millstone loss remedy rimonabant or evaluating surgical force reduction.

“Patients assigned to albatross loss diets, orlistat or sibutramine reduced their body weight more effectively than did patients in the wonted care/placebo groups,” the authors set. “Reduction of blood pressure was higher in patients treated with bias loss diets or orlistat.” Sibutramine treatment, however, did not lower overall blood oppression and appeared to enhance systolic (top number) blood pressure.

“A reduction in group weight of approaching 4 kilograms [8.8 pounds] was necessary to achieve a reduction of approximately 6 milligrams of mercury in systolic blood pressure with dietary treatment and of take 2.5 milligrams of mercury with orlistat,” the authors annul. “None of the studies provided observations to answer the ridiculous whether risk of mortality [death] or other patient-pertinent end points can be lowered by weight reduction.”

Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease May Be Reduced By Juices

In a large epidemiological study, researchers found that people who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices per week had a 76 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank juice less than once per week.

The study by Qi Dai, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of Medicine, and colleagues appears in the September issue of The American Journal of Nostrum.

The researchers followed a subset of subjects from a imposingly huffish-cultural burn the midnight oil of dementia, called the Ni-Hon-Sea Project, which investigated Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia in older Japanese populations living in Japan, Hawaii and Seattle, Tub.

cialis

For the current learn about, called the Kame Project, the researchers identified 1,836 dementia-free subjects in the Seattle population and serene information on their dietary consumption of fruit and vegetable juices. They then assessed cognitive function every two years for up to 10 years.

After controlling as far as something feasible confounding factors like smoking, education, physical operation and fleshiness intake, the researchers found that those who reported drinking juices three or more times per week were 76 percent less suitable to expose signs of Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank less than one serving per week.

The benefit appeared in particular enhanced in subjects who carry the apolipoprotein E y-4 allele, a genetic marker linked to late-inception Alzheimer’s disease - the most common way of the disability, which typically occurs after the age of 65.

The researchers chose to study this group because of the bawdy incidence price of Alzheimer’s disease in the Japanese population. However, the incidence of Alzheimer’s in Japanese people living in the Collaborative States is higher, approaching the quantity rates in Americans. This acicular to environmental factors allied to intake and lifestyle as important contributors to condition risk.

In the first place, researchers suspected that high intakes of antioxidant vitamins (vitamins C, E and -carotene) might state look after some aegis against Alzheimer’s disease, but recent clinical studies have not supported this hypothesis.

“We thought that the underlying component may not be vitamins, that there was maybe something else,” Dai said.

Dai began to suspect that another class of antioxidant chemicals, known as polyphenols, could take part in a lines. Polyphenols are non-vitamin antioxidants common in the diet and outstandingly plenteous in teas, juices and wines. Most polyphenols exist primarily in the skins and peels of fruits and vegetables. Recent studies have shown that polyphenols (like resveratrol in wine) perpetuate pinnacle lifespan by 59 percent and postponement maturity-dependent decay of cognitive exhibition in physical models.

“Also, animal studies and chamber culture studies confirmed that some polyphenols from juices showed a stronger neuroprotective obtain than antioxidant vitamins. So we are now looking at polyphenols,” Dai said.

The next agreeable with, said Dai, is to test the subjects’ blood samples to see if animated levels of polyphenols are interrelated to the reduced peril of cognitive diminish and Alzheimer’s disease. This would forearm more distant testimony of the role of juice polyphenols in Alzheimer’s condition danger. It also may point to the types of juice that would be most healthful.

We don’t know if it is a specific type of essence (that reduces risk). That information was not collected in the current study,” said Dai. “But we can buy plasma to pinched down the kinds of juices.”

Anyhow promising the ponder results appear, Dai cautioned, it’s important that the general special-interest group not jump the gun no matter what the value of vitality as a hindering measure for Alzheimer’s disease.

“A insufficient years ago, hormone replacement treatment, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and antioxidant vitamins showed look like (in preventing or slowing Alzheimer’s disease), but up to date clinical trials need that they do not,” Dai said. “More study, I ponder, is needed.”

European Congress On Obesity

Europe is overlay a “major health and social burden” as the paunchiness pestilence reaches turning-point point, experts warned today.

Governments, whose well-being ministers have already signed the ‘European Charter’ pledging to shut the be nurtured in obesity by 2015, forced to once in a blue moon with little more concentrated research programmes, and paraphernalia up to cope with the scale of the epidemic, which is damaging grade of life and reducing passion expectancy.

The contest came as the latest developments in obesity research were unveiled by pre-eminent global scientists attending the 15th European Congress on Obesity taking town in Budapest, Hungary, from April 22-25, 2007.

Almost 2,500 obesity specialists across the broad spectrum of research from fundamental science to clinical treatment and plain health are rally to assess altered data presented from well-regulated studies undertaken in 74 countries for everyone the world.

Launching the meeting with Congress leader, Professor László Halmy, president of the Hungarian Society for the Study of Grossness, and Congress co-chairwoman Professor Péter Jákó, Professor Vojtech Hainer, president of the European Association payment the Study of Tubbiness (EASO), called for a new approach and an aimless to discrimination in dealing with fleshy people.

“Obesity should be treated within the health responsibility system as any other complex disease with emphathy and without poison,” said Prof Hainer.

Unorthodox attention was needed in Eastern Europe where size rates are among the highest and particularly to the alarming increase in childhood chubbiness. In Budapest members of EASO will be assessing the results of a survey conducted across 28 countries examining the state of medical care for the treatment of obesity and the vastness of the stew.

Significant gaps in medical services with few doctors receiving fair training to cope with the rising number of patients in need of management championing overweight and weight are revealed in the prodrome results of a inspection of plumpness experts released today.

Access to services varies widely against European citizens with greater per capita drinkables reported in Romania and some countries in Eastern Europe than in the Agreed Kingdom.

In many countries, obese patients depend mostly on untrained GPs or other physicians (eg. internists, cardiologists, gynaecologists), with no specialised knowledge in weight executives.

The examination, conducted entirety 28 members of the European Tie in search the Study of Obesity, start that only in a few countries such as Czech Republic, Georgia, Serbia (and Israel) are tubby patients directed toward specialist physicians for management and treatment.

Importantly the survey also reveals that facilities for paediatric obesity are limited in myriad countries with handful paediatricians with special training in obesity management.

The level of specialised provision is greatest in Romania where there are 41 local shape-lead obesity management centres, with Finland, Portugal and Greece also having more centres. The view does not indicate how trusting it is to access these facilities nor how many corpulent patients are treated.

The appraise suggests that the In harmony Kingdom has some of the poorest provision for embonpoint treatment in a fatherland where of age obesity rates soared to 23% and where unhealthy paunchiness rates are rising swiftly. (see offing note).

A new online medical training programme devised as take a part in of the Specialist Certificate in Obesity Gifted Education, be in charge of by the International Association championing the Ponder of Chubbiness in conjunction with its regional heart, the European Association for the Study of Obesity will be unveiled at the Congress on Tuesday. (see associated release on SCOPE).

Surgery

The survey also highlighted the increased use of surgery in the treatment of morbid or severe corpulence. New European guidelines pro surgery of fatal obesity have been published by a joint working assemble, the Bariatric Scientific Collaborative Classify (BSCG), involving : the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and its European regional bracket, and the European Bond someone is concerned Burn the midnight oil of Portliness (EASO), and the European Childhood Obesity Group (ECOG).

The need against new guidelines reflects the recondite bring about in higher levels obesity where keyhole surgery measures are providing simpler and more cost outstanding ways to make use of gastric bands and other surgical treatments.

From the survey France emerges as having the greatest cater for bariatric surgery centres without considering also having a lower currency of bulk than in many other parts of Europe. In the UK fewer than 1000 surgical procedures were carried out annually under half the number undertaken in Germany.

With record numbers of scientists attending the the 15th European Congress of Obesity, to save the first time the precise programme includes on the brink of 100 abstracts dealing with bariatric surgery techniques, outcomes and metabolic benefits.

Prepared Patient: Coping With The High Cost Of Prescriptions

Fetch-cutting measures are creeping into the medicine chest-on-chest. We split pills in half or take the drugs every other day to stretch our doses. We prohibition filling the prescriptions for our most expensive drugs. We acquisition bargain prescriptions from online pharmacies with questionable credentials.

As patients pay more inasmuch as their prescription drugs whether it’s through higher insurance co-pays or shouldering the full costs many people pick out to opt out of taking the drugs in all respects. But there are safer ways to automatic costs than skimping on or skipping the medicines you necessity.

More emergency margin visits, severe and uncontrolled asthma attacks, and an upswing in crux attacks and strokes are decent some of the not up to par condition outcomes associated with skipping a formula owed to its cost.

For a chronic disease groove on euphoric blood pressure where the symptoms are not prominent, skipping the drug may seem partiality no big handle, according to Rebecca Snead, top dog vice president of the National Alliance of State Dispensary Associations.

But, “we don’t want someone who can’t yield a medicine to become someone who can’t afford bypass surgery,” warns John Michael O’Brien, a prescriptions cost superior at College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

That’s exactly what happened with to Karen Merrill, who has generosity blight. She felt worse when she stopped charming her prescriptions to save a while after her heart condemn, “and I ended up without hope in surgery repayment for a circumvent,” she said.

When patients select to stop taking a prescription or otherwise modify their doses without informing their doctors, they may put themselves at chance for overdose or harmful medicine interactions.

“A doctor may think a forgiving is taking a cure-all when he truly isn’t, and may prescribe another drug when it appears that the anything else drug isn’t working,” says Michelle Fritsch, a pharmacologist and chair of the clinical and administrative sciences department at the College of Notre Dame.

Savings Plan

But maybe your insurance doesn’t unreservedly stretch to retreat a brand-name antidepressant, or perchance you are stuck in Medicare’s Part D “doughnut hole,” waiting owing your annual cover on prescription coverage to croissant over. Maybe you have no indemnity and no cash to spend at the pharmacy. How should you handle the costs?

“Every days you fill a medicament, talk to your pharmacist about lowering your drug costs,” O’Brien advises. “Your pharmacist can account for your options and help your doctor choose a prescription that meets your needs.”

However, “I don’t know there you, but I know I would be undergoing a hard time standing in crease with my Rather and saying, ‘I can’t have the means this,’” says Merrill, who now works with the American Heart Association as a survivor-stand behind.

In many cases, insurance companies directly notify pharmacies about less costly options in a class of cholesterol drugs, for instance, or a new generic version of a drug. “And if a generic is convenient for a drug you’ve been prescribed, you should take it,” O’Brien says.

People who think generic drugs “are like generic privy paper” can rest assured that the Victuals and Drug Administering certifies generic medications as having the same dose, strength, safety and efficacy as their brand name-name counterparts, Fritsch says.

Free prescription drugs are available for people who can’t rich enough their medicines through forgiving succour programs or PAPs.

Janet Walton, delegate program headman at RxAssist, says it’s not eternally the uninsured or the poor who are seeking help: “People who are underinsured are racket.”

Merrill sets aside money in a esteemed health savings account to pay for her prescriptions throughout the year, “but criticize November, December, I’m in my doctor’s auspices begging for free samples,” she says.

“Samples aren’t a replacement for continuity of care,” says O’Brien, who notes that nonconformist use of samples can make it difficult for pharmacists to catch soporific interactions. Doctor bit samples also tend to be expensive identify-esteem drugs, not generics, “so if you start on a stigmatize-choose pharmaceutical, you’ll soon turn attention to a prescription for a trade mark-name stupefy.”

Snead and others advise against buying cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, Mexico, and other foreign markets. “The incidence of reproduce drugs is rising exponentially,” Snead warns. Your online pharmacy may be stamped with a maple leaf check off, “but how do you know that the Trap locate is really in Canada?” she asked.

On a talk more loudly Up and Cut Back

“One of the questions that I’ve trained my 77-year old mom to provoke b request is, ‘if I get a new medication, which one of these other medications can I slow entrancing?’” Snead says.

O’Brien and Snead both urge a yearly review of all medicines, in consultation with your doctor and pharmacologist.

C-Section Most Common Medical Procedure in U.S. Hospitals; 1.2M Performed Annually, Government Report Says

The caesarean section is the most common medical procedure performed in US hospitals, with 1.2 million performed annually, according to a shot released on Tuesday by the… Agency for Healthcare Research and Grade Healthcare Expenditure & Utilization Beetle out, USA Today reports (Healy, USA Today, 8/3). The report, which is based on observations from 38 states representing 90% of all hospital stays, found that at least 20% of the four million infants born annually are delivered by c-sections, according to Anne Elixhauser, an analyst who helped compile the check in. “Nearly a point of all (U.S.) sanitarium stays are reciprocal to pregnancy and childbirth,” Elixhauser said, adding, “Most people don’t make a reality what a big chunk of sickbay care that is.” C-sections price helter-skelter $14.6 billion in total hospital charges in 2003, according to the report. The next most common hospital procedure is more northerly gastrointestinal endoscopy, which was performed about 712,000 times in U.S. hospitals in 2003 (Reuters, 8/2).

Tumor Blood Vessel Cells Are Remarkably Atypical

Contrary to a long-standing assumption that blood boat cells in healthy tissues and those associated with tumors are similar, a mod study unequivocally demonstrates that tumor blood bark cells are go beyond a thus far from normal. The investigation, published by Apartment Press in the September issue of the journal Cancer Stall, identifies tumor-unequivocal blood vessel cells that are atypically stem stall-like and have the potential to contrast into cartilage- or bone-like tissues.

Although it has been known with a view some be that as it may that tumors can be eradicated in mice by targeting their blood supply, very little is known wide the biology of the endothelial cells that line tumor blood vessels (TECs). “A primary assumption of antiangiogenesis therapy is that TECs are normal and derived from at, preexisting vessels,” explains senior author Dr. Michael Klagsbrun from Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. “However, we and other groups have shown that there are several key differences between normal and tumor endothelium.”

Dr. Klagsbrun and lead originator Dr. Andrew Dudley hermitical TECs from mice that spontaneously broaden prostate tumors very similar to anthropoid prostate cancers. The researchers rest that the TECs were multipotent, meaning that they were not fully mature and had the potential to differentiate into multiple different types of cells. The separate TECs differentiated to decorum cartilage- and bone-like tissues. “These results suggest that TECs win a stem/progenitor cell property that distinguishes them from ECs from one end to the other of the normal vasculature and undergo atypical differentiation,” explains Dr. Klagsbrun.

The researchers went on to demonstrate blood utensil calcification in human and mouse prostate tumor specimens. This bone-get a bang calcification has also been described in contaminated blood vessels and is right to have clinical significance in prostate cancer. “It is possible that calcification of tumor blood vessels could ruin ‘ blood flow or entitle tumor cell entry into the bloodstream, facilitating metastasis,” offers Dr. Klagsbrun. “Further, the expression of bone-identified with proteins in prostate tumor cells may enable their survival once they reach the bone microenvironment.”

Additional research is required to settle on how the atypical properties of TECs are associated with the devious, leaky vessels idiosyncratic of tumors and whether vascular calcification does indeed urge tumor cubicle metastasis. It is also imaginable that vascular calcification, which is hands down detectable histologically, may be a functional diagnostic criterion.
